Personality & Traits

General Overview Sam is friendly and personable, usually able to foster good working relationships with his colleagues. In the past he has been rather guarded when it comes to friendships, however he has slowly worked through those issues and become more willing to get close to his colleagues. He tries to project an air of calm to those working under him, saving any stress or urgency for rhetoric situations that really require it.

He spent some time out of Starfleet, during which time he travelled and visited planets both inside and outside the Federation. This has given him some slightly unconventional views.
Strengths & Weaknesses +Natural Engineer with an affinity for technology.
+An experienced and reliable officer.
+Not easily panicked.

-Sam can be a little old fashioned with regards to some working practices, and he can be a little stubborn about them too.
-He still finds it difficult to let himself get close to people, although recent events have improved that.
-Can be too trusting and easily manipulated.
Ambitions Sam is an engineer and an explorer at heart. Starfleet is the closest thing he has to a home and he would like to spend as much of his time as possible on Starships doing good work.
Hobbies & Interests Like most engineers, Sam spends a lot of his free time reading technical manuals & engineering journals. He can often be persuaded to be a little more sociable though, especially if someone else is buying the drinks. He has never really taken to replicator technology and much prefers to cook whenever possible. He tends to seek out places to find fresh or at least good quality ingredients at every opportunity.

He is especially particular when it comes to coffee and has been known to spend a lot of time and effort tracking down a supply of the real thing.

Personal History Sam grew up reading about the daring exploits of Captain James Kirk & pioneers like him. Growing up on his family's farm, he often found himself helping to fix various machinery and found that he had an affinity for it. He soon came to admire Montgomery Scott as much as Kirk and started to dream about being a miracle working Starfleet Engineer. He enlisted is Starfleet as soon as he was able, not wanting to spend years at the academy before he got out to see the galaxy.

During the enlisted personnel training program, Sam put all his energy into getting himself onto a starship. Eventually, his hard work paid off and he was given the assignment he reall wanted, the engineering department of an exploration ship with a well regarded Captain, the USS Bozeman under Captain Morgan Bateson.

That first mission would prove fateful as the Bozeman was caught in a time loop for 90 years before being eventually rescued by the Enterprise D

Sam found his whole world had changed. His family were gone and the galaxy was a very different place to the one he knew. He took an extended leave of absence and ended up drifting around the Federation, learning about this new world. He struggled to fit in, but evetually adapted to most of the changes. Fortunately for him, most of the technology was still based of things he knew, he just had a lot of catching up to do. During his time out of the fleet, he tried to experience as many different things as possible. He spent time in a Vulcan monastery, a Ferengi cargo ship and helped establish the agricultural systems for a new Klingon colony among other experiences.

With the threat of war with the Dominion began to loom, Sam realised that he still felt a connection to Starfleet and re-enlisted, this time going to the academy. He served with some distinction during the war and, when it was all over, decided to stay in the service having finally found a sense of belonging.

His second stint in Starfleet has been a success so far. He found that he was more aware of who he was and what he wanted out of life, which led him to progress steadily to the position of chief engineer.

He spent a long time on the USS Lancaster, an Akira Class ship full of Starfleet's best technology. He developed a friendship with the Trill Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Commander Graz, who's symbiote had first hand experience of the 23rd century that Sam remembered so well. Graz was eager to promote Sam to assistant chief engineer when the position came up.

After a lot of soul searching, Sam accepted a transfer to the USS Odessa, an old Excelsior class ship, as Chief Engineer. The Odessa wasn't as impressive as the Lancaster, but he got to be the Chief Engineer. During his time on the Odessa, he developed a close friendship with a young Vulcan named Vron. Sam found Vron's bone dry sense of humour particularly entertaining and took great pleasure in trying to get the Vulcan to show a hint of frustration.

When the Odessa went in for a major refit, Sam took an assignment on the USS Archimedes, a small Nova class ship intended to be used by the Starfleet corps of engineers. His time on the Archimedes was relatively short as she was irreparably damaged in an attack. However, Sam became very close to the Intelligence Officer, Lieutenant Oksana Volkova during their time aboard.

When the Archimedes was decommissioned, Sam and Oksana were able to get assignments together as consultants on Deep Space 12, while that station was in its early days.
