Dinner for Two... Three? Four? - Part 3

Posted on Fri Dec 1st, 2017 @ 1:36am by Lieutenant Commander Yara Blackwater & Lieutenant Rafan Kel

Mission: Deep Space 12
Location: The Prism
Timeline: Pre-MD04 1030hrs

Dolan looked up again briefly and wore an expression that Rafan would know meant the man was processing what he had just heard. He didn't seem entirely convinced of what Rafan was telling him. "How slow is slow, exactly?" He finally asked.

"Slow. We aren't sleeping together, but we spend time with one another and make sure that we are both taken care of." He replied, seemingly unfazed by his companions question as he ate a mouthful of potatoes.

"That sounds more like a friendship than anything else." Dolan said with a slight smirk and watched as Rafan glanced back toward the bar again. This time, he followed the Trill's gaze to the tall blonde at the bar. "Is that her?"

"Yes it is, she doesn't usually come to the Prism, too loud and crowded...usually." The Trill said as he cut off another piece of his steak as he looked over at Dolan and smiled. "I said things were going slow, we are friends, but she's helped me through some rough patches here recently..."

“Well then.” Dolan said and then smiled, standing up and wiping his mouth before he began to walk toward the bar heading for Yara.

"Oh good gods don't bother her, Dolan!" Rafan exclaimed as he rushed to get up out of his seat, his utensils clattering on the plate and table as he tried to stop his former lover from getting them both murdered since Yara was out amongst people and drinking. That wasn't a bad sign, but it wasn't a good sign either and he knew how she hated being bothered by anyone.

"Just leave her be, Dolan..."

“What do you mean? Calm down. I just want to meet her.” Dolan said, waving Rafan off as he finished his approach to Yara. “Yara Blackwater is it?”

Yara’s expression immediately soured when she heard her name called by the unfamiliar male voice. She didn’t even like people she knew calling to her. She finished off the rest of her drink and hissed a bit at the burn before she finally turned around to face the stranger.

“What?” She demanded flatly and glowered at him.

The older man was briefly taken aback by her “greeting”, but recovered quickly and smiled. “I’m Dolan Christensen,” he offered his hand to her. “A friend of Rafan’s, we were just talking about you and he happened to see you up here so I thought I’d introduce myself and offer to let you come join us for dinner.”

Yara seemed to consider this for a moment, eyeing Dolan up and down and seemed to be pondering something. Finally, she sat back in her chair and quirked a brow. “So you’re the Dolan that has the wonder-dick.”

"Oh...damn it..." Was all the Trill could manage as he slowed and walked up to where Dolan was standing as he managed to engage Yara in a peaceful conversation though he was certain that there were more than a few things the blonde wanted to do to the man for bothering her, but current it seemed that her curiosity was winning out over her baser, more violent urges.

"As you so eloquently put it...yes this is that Dolan, Yara." He said and seemed ready to face his maker now. "I invited him to take part in my zhian'tara."

“Uhh...” Was all Dolan could really manage as he stood there looking between the two, obviously caught quite off guard by his apparently earned monicker for the time he had spent with Rafan.

Her gaze shifted to the Trill then but her expression didn’t change from what it had been. “Well, that would make sense considering your relationship with each other and exactly what the zhian’tara entails.” She said simply and shrugged.

Rafan had to resister the urge to face palm as Yara did what she did best; eloquently describing a person in her own very special way as he saw Dolan was still attempting to process just what had be said to him and he could see the curious expression on the other man's face that said he wanted answers and wouldn't be taking no for an answer.

Finally, Dolan seemed to recover from his shock and gave Yara a smirk. She was sassy and he liked that, though he was a bit surprised that Rafan was so taken by the trait. "Well, I know I would love to get to know Rafan's friends and he seems to be particularly attached to you. So please, why don't you come join us for dinner or at least let us get you another drink and we can talk a bit."

Yara turned her attention to Rafan then and her eyes narrowed just slightly, an expression Rafan would be readily familiar with as Yara trying to figure out if he was up to something as it were. If she were being honest, she was rather hungry. She had simply been planning on taking dinner in her quarters, but the Prism did have a reputation for very good food. "Alright, fine." She slid off her chair and allowed Dolan to lead her back over to the table that he and Rafan were occupying.

Rafan for his part did his best to remain calm, though he was more than a bit surprised by the way Yara had completely acquiesced to Dolan's offer, allowing her to guided over to the table without much fight. Maybe she was just accepting the offer of food, he wasn't sure since there were times that the statuesque blonde was a deep mystery to him and any previous experience that he had stood in no good stead in pluming those depths.

He moved to grab a chair from an unoccupied table and brought it over for Yara before he moved to sit down as a menu was set down in front of the blonde so she could figure out what she wanted to eat.

The blonde handed the menu back immediately and simply pointed at Rafan's meal. "Bring me that cooked medium rare and another Haliian rum." She said, paused a moment, then added, "Please."

Dolan looked at her a moment and couldn't help but chuckle as he settled back into his chair and mixed up his food again. "So Rafan told me that you two met on an assignment a few years back?" He prompted and took a sip of his wine as he looked over the woman a bit closer now. She had an interesting beauty about her, definitely not traditional by any means, but in that respect he could understand why Rafan would be attracted to her - though he was still surprised that he claimed to be in love with a woman.

"Yes, we did. We were both posted on the USS Gemini for a short while... he wasn't exactly right in his head around then." Yara replied with a shrug.

"No...I was a bit of a mess then, I will admit." He concurred and looked over at Yara briefly and then at Dolan, wondering for the first time what was going through the other man's head at this revelation that the Trill was in love with a woman. Was it so strange that he might find women attractive? Yes his first lover had been a made, but he could admit that there were attractive men and women in the world, at least to him and he was currently sitting with two of those that he found attractive.

"Though there were problems aboard the Gemini and it was probably for the best that she was given a new crew and commander after receiving a full refit."

"That's putting it mildly." Yara grumbled under her breath and immediately picked up her drink as it was put down in front of her.

"Well that is unfortunate." Dolan replied sympathetically to the two. "I do remember you telling me about some issues when we took our vacation on Trill together when you were between your assignment there and your guest lecturing position on Earth."

"Well if you do remember that I was consulting with a Trill based mining company on their mining practices to avoid a catastrophic explosion and you were part of the Federation inspection team overseeing the lithium mining and cracking facilities to ensure that they were meeting the standards for everything." Rafan replied with a chuckle as he sipped his drink and leaned back some trying to relax.

"Mainly family issues for the Captain it seemed and then a whole tangle of other bureaucratic nonsense, but the crew at least got a lay over at a lovely resort...where I regaled Yara with information about Hebitian artifacts and she had to quickly escort us out since I had the guards eyeballing me..."

"Well, you started talking about selling their priceless artifacts on the black market of course they were rather unhappy about it." Yara replied and eyed Rafan a bit. "I try to do something nice and he nearly gets us arrested."

Chuckling softly, Dolan shook his head. "He did something similar when I took him to a museum on Tellar when we were first dating. Thankfully I was able to convince the curator that he was harmless and just... very excited."

"In my defense, the curator was being an idiot in how he was displaying his pre-Republic artifacts and I just thought that it was some of a travesty that most of the more complete pieces of the era were in the hands of private individuals." Rafan replied as both of them seemed to be ganging up on him, but it seemed that they were getting along and that was a good sign in his book.
Yara simply shook her head at that, not even dignifying it with a response. Rafan was a strange man with viewpoints that Yara didn’t even remotely understand most of the time, but it seemed to make him happy to babble on about the most random of subjects... and she supposed it didn’t much hurt anything.

Dolan shook his head and drifted into a companionable silence, allowing both himself and Rafan to continue on their meals and Yara to begin on hers once it was brought out, obviously it had been given priority since the two gentlemen at the table had their meals already. They quiet companionship had given Dolan time to consider everything he had learned tonight and decided it was probably for the best in the end. Perhaps he wouldn’t be able to make Rafan happy even if he had tried.

Rafan was quietly eating his meal as he looked between both of his companions and was glad that they were getting along because he would like them both to know one another and maybe even be friends. He knew that might not be a good plan or might even be something that either of them would want, but he could hope. He had soon finished off his potatoes and jellied jigalla fruit, working on the rest of his steak for last as he occasionally glanced over at Yara and Dolan to see where they were on their meals.
